Attending a coroner’s post-mortem

Complete our online form if you wish to attend a coroner's post-mortem.

The Coroners (Investigation) Regulations 2013 enables certain individuals to attend a post mortem examination with the consent of the coroner.

To apply you must be a:

  • trainee doctor
  • third year university student studying a relevant course
  • nurse involved in end of-life care
  • paramedic or ambulance practitioner
  • police officer.

Applicants must live or work in West Sussex and be a minimum of 18 years old.

What you need to do

Brighton Mortuary is unable to facilitate any observers until March 2025.

Complete our online application form below. Once we receive your application you will be notified by email of the Coroner’s decision within 5 working days.

When consent is given, your details will be passed to Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and you will hear directly from them if they are able to accommodate your request.
