Civil Engineering apprenticeships Q&A

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I previously worked for 14 years within the construction industry. I started my apprenticeship aged 30 and currently work as a technician within the Carriageways and Footways team.

What inspired you to become a Civil Engineer?

I was at a time in my life where I was unhappy with my current field of work and wanted to challenge myself. Having not gone to university straight from school I wanted the satisfaction of working towards and obtaining a formal qualification.

Why did you choose to do your apprenticeship with West Sussex?

As a resident of West Sussex, I liked the idea that by doing my apprenticeship at West Sussex County Council (WSCC) I could improve things within the area I live.

What is the best thing about being a Civil Engineering apprentice at West Sussex?

The opportunity to be involved with a wide variety of work along with being able to develop skills and knowledge along the way.

What do you particularly enjoy about working in the HTP team?

It’s always nice to see a scheme you’ve been involved with come to fruition and make a real difference for the community.

How are you supported by West Sussex, your manager and team during your apprenticeship?

Throughout my apprenticeship my manager and WSCC were brilliant; any issues I had were always resolved. There was always someone on hand to help with any questions I had regarding my coursework.

Is there a particular case or something about your work here that makes you feel proud?

Knowing I’ve made a real difference in improving the highways, positive feedback from the public is always nice too!.

What would you say are the challenges of being a Civil Engineering apprentice?

Juggling university deadlines, work deadlines and home life can sometimes be difficult, the council are very supportive though.

If there is one myth you could bust about being a Civil Engineering apprentice, what would it be?

You have to be young to do an apprenticeship, It’s never too late!

What would you say to somebody considering joining us?

Challenge yourself and go for it, it’s definitely worthwhile.
