Working in out of school provision
Information about what out of school childcare is and what makes a great out of school childcare worker.
About out of school childcare
Out of school childcare, or wraparound childcare, provides play activities and childcare in a safe environment before and after school. It is for children and young people aged 4 to 14 years, or up to 18 for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Usually this is in breakfast clubs, after-school clubs and holiday play schemes and clubs.
Working in out of school childcare is a great option if you want to work with school age children. You will support children by building trusting relationships whilst leading and supervising play.
You will build relationships with parents, carers, and other professionals too - so you can create an environment where all children feel safe and can relax and access play that’s appropriate to their needs and is fun!
Things to consider
Working in out of school childcare is a great option if you would like to work with older children. Out of school childcare offers you a chance to share your passion - from sports to drama, art to nature.
Out of school childcare offers flexibility in hours, particularly if you are looking for a part-time role and if you already work in an early years setting that is open 9am to 3pm, you could increase your hours by working in out of school childcare.
