The purpose of the 'Learn My Way' volunteer role is to help members of the public visiting the library and to provide support to people attending weekly Learn My Way sessions.
Learn My Way is an online training programme that teaches basic computer skills and helps people to gain confidence using the internet following step-by-step online courses.
The role requires:
- IT literacy and sound understanding of the internet
- excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- initiative and the ability to work without supervision
- being adaptable to different skill and knowledge levels of customers
- the ability to help, support or demonstrate digital skills to beginners
- being able to commit to running regular Learn My Way sessions
The ideal volunteer will:
- be happy to engage with a variety of people of all ages
- demonstrate patience and understanding
- be committed to the equality and diversity of the local community
- enjoy working with people
- enjoy providing IT support and demonstrating digital skills
- be aged 18 or above
Your duties will be to:
- support and motivate learners to register and access the Learn My Way website at a regular session in the library
- listen to the needs of learners and work with them to identify what they want to achieve from the Learn My Way sessions
- encourage learners to complete the online courses to improve their confidence with computers and digital skills, including general internet use, email, online safety, job searches, banking and shopping
- ensure you have completed all relevant training for the role
Time required
Approximately two hours per week. Days may vary at each library.
Guidance and support
Library staff will be on duty with you in the library. All volunteers will be given a named library contact who can provide support and information.
Training and equipment
All digital volunteers will receive library volunteer induction training, including health and safety. You will required to complete the Learn My Way Digital Champion training and Staying Safe Online training to carry out this role. Relevant additional training or refresher training will be provided as required.
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
This role does not require a DBS check.
References
One reference will be required before you are accepted for the role. This must be someone who has known you in a personal, work or voluntary capacity for at least three years.
Other information
All volunteers must sign a volunteer agreement. You may be required to carry out a practical exercise relevant to the role before starting.
Volunteers are required to wear a lanyard and volunteer photo ID badge while in the library. You must also sign the attendance sheet on arrival and departure.
