The Wave Project - Brighton and Sussex offers Surf Therapy to young people aged 8-18 who are struggling with their mental health.
What we do
- Young people are referred to us by professionals having been identified as at risk of poor mental health and isolation. They can then join our six-week Surf Therapy course on Southwick beach, supported by a 1:1 volunteer Surf Mentor.
- Our Surf Therapy sessions offer young people the opportunity to learn a new skill, build a supportive peer group and connect with nature. Surf Therapy builds confidence, resilience and self esteem, and it's a lot of fun for everyone!
- Our team provides support and encouragement every step of the way, taking young people's specific needs and circumstances into account. We are positive, non-judgemental and there is no pressure at all. There is no way to 'fail' at surfing!
- Once they have completed their Surf Therapy course, young people can join our regular Surf Club, to develop their surfing, build friendships and contribute to the programme of activities. Once they turn 14 they can start volunteering with us.
- Evaluation has shown that young people who attend our sessions are happier, calmer, more likely to engage with education and have a better outlook on life.
