1 About unavailable routes

Sections of the West Sussex rights of way network sometimes become unavailable. Closures are usually temporary and are to protect your safety. On rare occasions paths may become subject to a permanent closure order.

The unavailable paths listed here are not available for use by the public and are without a locally signed alternative.

Please be aware that although these website pages are updated regularly, it is sometimes necessary to close a path as an emergency or for short periods of time. In such cases information may not be available on the website.

2 Temporary closures

Please see below a list of longer term temporary closures on our network. For enquiries about short term closures of up to 21 days, please contact the PRoW Team.

*Closure may be lifted sooner if works are completed ahead of schedule. An extension may also be required and we will state this from the outset if we are aware that it will be a longer closure.

Amberley

Affected route: Public Footpath No. 2667 (part) - Closed for a distance of approximately 75 metres from its junction with Church Street (TQ027132) heading westwards along FP 2667 to Grid Reference TQ026132. Note: An alternative route has been provided around the closed section.
Duration: Closed until 14 July 2025.
Reason: To protect public safety while a collapsed wall adjoining the route is repaired.

Angmering

Affected route: Public Footpath No. 2149 - Closed for a distance of approximately 960 metres from its junction with Dappers Lane (SU073055) heading east and then south to its junction with Water Lane (SU076048).
Duration: Closed for 36 months until 30 April 2027.
Reason: To protect public safety while property development takes place on adjacent land.

Ansty and Staplefield and Cuckfield

Affected routes: Public Footpaths No. 65CR and 8bCU. Closed from the southern junction of 65CR, at its junction with Footpaths 6CR, 69CR and 103CR (530185, 123310) to almost the northern end of Fp 8bCU where it joins Footpath 9CU (530213, 123898), a distance of approximately 625 metres.
Duration: Closed for 6 months until 21 July 2025 and it will be followed by a further closure.
Reason: To protect public safety due to an unsafe bridge.

Arundel

Affected route: Public Footpath No. 3080 - Closed from its junction with Ford Road (TQ012067) heading south-east to its junction with Public Footpath No. 206 (TQ013067) for a distance of approximately 105 metres.
Duration: Closed for 12 months until 9 March 2026.
Reason: To protect public safety while development works are undertaken.

Ashurst

Affected route: Public Bridleway No. 1872 - Closed from its junction with Footpath 1873 in the north to its junction with footpath 2591 in the south, a distance of approximately 800 metres.
Duration: Current closure runs for 6 months until September 2025. It is expected this will be followed by a further closure.
Reason: To protect public safety due to an unsafe surface.

Barnham and Eastergate

Affected route: Public Footpath No. 325 - Closed from its junction with Lake Lane (SU968046) heading in a southerly direction to its junction with Yapton Road (SU967040) for a distance of approximately 675 metres.
Duration: Closed for 12 months until 15 May 2025.
Reason: To protect public safety following a risk assessment of the operation of a railway crossing on the route.

Affected route: Public Footpath No. 1325_1 - Closed from its junction with Public Bridleway 771 (TQ071270) heading in a north-easterly direction to its junction with Rowner Road (TQ074272) for a distance of approximately 380 metres.
Duration: Closed for 6 months until 10 June 2025.
Reason: To protect public safety due to an unsafe bridge.

Affected route: Public Footpath No. 23Bo (part) - Closed from its junction with Chapel Road (TQ254215) heading east and then north to its junction with Public Footpath No. 24Bo (TQ258217), a distance of approximately 555 metres.
Duration: Closed for 12 months until 6 January 2026. This may be followed by a further closure.
Reason: To protect public safety due to a broken footbridge.

Affected route: Public Footpath No. 230 (part) - Closed from its junction with the A27 (SU804052) heading south to its junction with Public Footpath 2824 24(SU804045), a distance of approximately 810 metres.
Duration: Closed until 7 September 2025 and may be followed by a further closure.
Reason: To protect public safety due to coastal erosion undermining the footpath.

Affected routes: Public Footpaths No. 1528 and 353Sy. Footpath 1528 closed from its junction with Fleming Way (527223 138845), northwards and eastwards to its junction with Public Footpath No. 353Sy. (527459 139114); and Public Footpath No. 353Sy, from its junction with Public Footpath No. 1528 (527459 139114), north-eastwards to its junction with Public Footpath No. 352Sy (528039 139649), a distance of 1,265m.
Duration: Closed from 6 January 2025 for 6 months until 6 July 2025.
Reason: To protect public safety while extensive construction works take place in the vicinity.

Affected route: Public Footpath No. 3377 (part) - Closed from its junction with Tinsley Green (TQ289395) heading generally eastwards to its junction with Steers Lane (TQ295394), a distance of approximately 115 metres.
Duration: Current closure runs until 16 December 2025.
Reason: To protect public safety while development works are undertaken.

Donnington

Affected route: Public Footpath No. 184_1 - Closed from its junction with Grosvenor Road to its junction with Footpath 184, a distance of approximately 78 metres.
Duration: Current 6 month closure until 10 September 2025, but hopefully the works will be completed in April and the path will be re-opened.
Reason: To protect public safety while gas replacement works are carried out.

East Grinstead

Affected route: Public Footpath No. 7EG (part) - Closed from its junction with Footpath 81EG in the north to the county boundary in the south, a distance of 1.05km.
Duration: Current closure runs until 15 May 2025.
Reason: To protect public safety due to an unsafe bridge.

Affected route: Public Footpath No. 873 - Closed from its junction with public footpath 871 (SU818207), south to its junction with Church Lane (SU816197), a distance of 1.2 km.
Duration: Closed for 6 months until 17 September 2025.
Reason: To protect public safety due to a landslip next to a reservoir.

Elsted and Treyford

Affected route: Public Footpath No. 3355 (part) - Closed from its junction with Footpath 3354 to Redlands Lane, a distance of approximately 770m.
Duration: Closed for 6 months until 22 July 2025 and likely to be followed by a further closure.
Reason: To protect public safety due to an unsafe bridge.

Ferring

Affected route: Public Footpath No. 2113 (part) - Closed from its junction with Langbury Lane to its junction with Onslow Drive over the railway, a distance of approximately 102m.
Duration: Closed until 12 August 2025 and expected to be followed by a further closure until December 2025.
Reason: To protect public safety due to an unsafe rail crossing.

Fishbourne

Affected route: Public Footpath No. 3059 (part) - Closed from its junction with Footpath 555 in the north (GR SU840041)_and its junction with Footpath 555 in the south (GR SU839038), a distance of 425m.
Duration: Closed for 12 months until 23 September 2025 and maybe followed by a further closure.
Reason: To protect public safety due to erosion of the sea wall.

Duration: Closed for 6 months until 5 August 2025 and may be followed by a further long-term closure.

Reason: To protect public safety due to the river embankment failure/breach.

Littlehampton

Affected route: Public Footpath 3109 from its junction with the slipway onto the River Arun, eastwards to its junction with the access road to Littlehampton Marina. An alternative route will be provided via the access road to Littlehampton Marina.
Duration: Closed for 6 months until 11 May 2025.
Reason: To protect public safety while development works are undertaken on adjacent land.

Reason: To protect public safety while the Lyminster bypass is built.
